Lyric Fill Light
Lyric Fill Light is a color-correction filter that simulates a fill light, brightening and pulling out shadow detail in underexposed areas of the source video image. It is particularly useful on high-contrast material, as it can open up shadows while leaving the existing highs and midtones untouched, as in both the examples above. The filter provides a fill threshold allowing tuning of the shadow range that is lighted. It is not uncommon for the effect to result in minor desaturation or flattening, so the filter includes standard saturation and contrast adjustments to compensate and fine tune the result.
The Lyric Fill Light filter includes a set of effect controls that are common across all Lyric effect filters. For a detailed description of these controls, please see the Common Effect Controls documentation.
Additionally, all Lyric Effect filters can be applied through mattes or masks to constrain the filter effect to particular areas of the image. For background information on mattes and masks, please refer to the Lyric Matte Primer.
The Fill Brightness slider controls the level of lighting applied to the shadows and the Fill Threshold adjusts the range of shadow tones that are affected. Increasing the threshold lights more of the scene, reducing it limits the lighting to darker shadows. Of course, the filter cannot pull detail out of actual blacks, and can magnify noise if used excessively on very dark shadows, but it generally will improve any underexposed portions of the material.
The Saturation and Constrast Adjust sliders provide handy access to common tuning adjustmentes for this filter, since as mentioned above, the effect can flatten and desaturate as it adds fill light. Usually only minor bumps in saturation and contrast are required.
The Effect Controls section is a set of common controls that are documented on the Common Effect Controls page. They can be used to achieve masked and other specialized filter effects.
