Lyric Super Posterize

Super Posterize

Lyric Super Posterize is a stylizing filter that can produce a wide range of posterizing effects. It can be configured to posterize just the luminance channel, as in the left example above, the chrominance channels as in the middle, or the RGB channels as on the right, and it has adjustable steps, threshold balance and rolloff softness. There is also an antialias function for smoothing the hard edges on low-rolloff posterizations.

Posterizing filters work by forcing the levels in the affected channels into discrete steps, appearing to "paint" the original video image with a small number of levels or colors.

The Lyric Super Posterize filter includes a set of effect controls that are common across all Lyric effect filters. For a detailed description of these controls, please see the Common Effect Controls documentation.

Additionally, all Lyric Effect filters can be applied through mattes or masks to constrain the filter effect to particular areas of the image. For background information on mattes and masks, please refer to the Lyric Matte Primer.

The Posterize dropdown menu selects the channels to be posterized: Luma, Chroma or RGB, as in the 3 examples above.

The Poster Steps slider sets the number of discreet stair-step levels in the target channels and the filter forces the levels in the input image to the closest poster level in the output image. Lower steps produce more stylistic effects, higher steps make the output image ever-more closely resemble the input image.

Balance adjusts the relative thresholds of all the posterizing steps. Once you have set the number of poster steps as desired, adjust the balance for fine control of the posterizing level thresholds.

Softness controls the rolloff at the threshold step edges. Low values produce hard, pixelated transitions between the poster levels, high values smooth these transitions.

If you use low softness settings, you can enable the Antialias checkbox to feather the edges of the poster level transitions.

Desaturate provides a quick way to get black-and-white posterization, although the posterizer in Lyric's Black and White filter may given more control.

The Effect Controls section is a set of common controls that are documented on the Common Effect Controls page. They can be used to achieve masked and other specialized filter effects.
